i added a couple demos to my download.com page. these are candidates for the sessions that start next week, and represent at least a subconcious attempt to get away from the girl-gets-away-mope-fest. speaking of which, since the lyrics came out so stream-of-(sub)conciousness, i didn't edit them at all. sang it right off the waffle house napkin.
while there are some things i find interesting about these two, i'm not crazy about that vocal. got a little carried away on the bgvs. but i think mike does a great job on the guitar, which is mostly untouched.
if you have a suggestion for a better title, let me know.
Posted by aokie at June 2, 2005 02:09 PM | TrackBackthanks leah. i guess if you are trying to communicate something specific, rewriting can make a world of difference. but if your goal is to capture a brief moment of inspiration, uneven as it might have been, then editing would defeat the purpose. also editing works against you if you are lazy.
Posted by: abe at June 3, 2005 03:17 PMTo the end of getting away from the "girl gets away mopefest songs," how about considering honoring your Middle Georgia heritage with some hell raising, beer swilling, honky tonk kinda songs?
Posted by: Craig at June 3, 2005 05:48 PMthe guitar and harmonica come through crystal clear. beautiful. the feel of the nyd song is great, maybe you could just put the oohs and aahs further back in the mix? that way, they'll be less overpowering. also, how about 'begin again' as a title?
and i like the way the words fit together in the other one. they sound like frustration, and it gives the song a lot of energy.
listening, my main response is just that it's right for you to make this cd.
Posted by: amy at June 3, 2005 06:57 PMI haven't heard enough of your stuff to make a comparative comment, but I think your voice sounds like buttah. I can't really get all the lyrics, but would be interested to see them. I like the mouth harp, but think it's maybe I little too "high in the mix?" I just thought it could go back a bit. It does evoke the personality of the southern train ambience, something akin to a Lucinda Williams jangle? I liked the background vocals on the new years piece to. You're a gifted guy.
Posted by: kathyj at June 4, 2005 10:04 AMcraig, i'm a-workin' on it. jes' hold on a minet.
amy, thanks. keep it up and you might win A FREE CD!!!
kathy, i really love lucinda williams. even though i don't own any of her stuff, when i heard it, i thought, "oh, so this is the music that i love." but i think i'll need some boots to pull it off.
