I seriously doubt the GOP will catch up with us next election.
My money on their pick for 2008 is Bill Frist, and that's regardless of whether Bush wins or loses.
If Bush wins, Cheney will not be put up for 2008, so they'll look for someone with broader appeal but with the same basic agenda - why not, if the current agenda wins? Frist will stay the course that Bush sets. Not to mention that if Bush wins, the likely Democratic contender will be Hillary Clinton, and the GOP will definitely want to put up someone that appeals to middle America more than Hillary. Frist is a doctor and relatively young, compared to many other senators.
If Bush loses? Still Frist. Frist is the man they'll want to knock out Kerry after four years. Their other contenders, at least potential ones that we can see now, are older, lack charisma and appeal, and aren't as appealing.
Would Frist bring in the center, assuming Bush loses? I'm sure they'd run him that way, but I'm quite convinced he'd govern from the far right the same way Bush has.

You and I are stuck in a serious rock and a hard place, Dennis. Maybe the GOP will catch up with us in the next Presidential election.
