Stand Up and Be Counted

Carl Bernstein, one half of the duo that broke the Watergate scandal, wrote a very convinving op-ed calling on Republicans to speak out against Bush in the way that principled Republicans, like Barry Goldwater, asked Nixon to resign thirty years ago. Bernstein, is surprised by the silence from GOP leaders who seem to slavishly support Bush even as the mess over the prision abuse scandal grows and grows.

Over the last year or so, I've heard many of my fellow Republicans upset at Bush for several reasons. However, very few are publicly speaking out. Instead, they choose party over principle wanting to appear unified and not wanting to piss off the far right. I think this is wrong. Bush failed as competent leader for many reasons. His administration ignored international law when dealing with detainees, setting the precedent for the current prisioner abuse scandal, he got this nation in a war with no verfiable reason. The administration also presided over looming deficits and still wants more tax cuts and President Bush has come out in favor a mean-spirited constitutional amendment which discriminates against gays and lesbians who wish to marry, thereby making the government the arbiter of who we a citizens can love. Folks, for a man that claims to be a "compassionate conservative," he is neither. He has gone against conservative principles and Republicans who still have consciences must speak out. There are times that the good of the nation we profess to love must be placed higher than partisan loyalty. Justice demands it.

Wow...what a great post. I've been very disheartened at the Republicans (I'm not one, fyi). I've heard very little from Republicans in general who have problems with Bush's policies. It's pretty obvious that there's some serious issues that Bush has caused..and they need to be dealt with.

I'm heartened to see moderate Republicans calling for Republicans to speak out. Thank you.

"I think Aziz is absolutely correct, barring something not evident, in saying that this is the sort of Republican candidate worthy of DFA support."

I agree Alan. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hey, check out the post about Bob Faust (CO-4) over at Dean Nation:

then go take a look at his web site. I think Aziz is absolutely correct, barring something not evident, in saying that this is the sort of Republican candidate worthy of DFA support.

I'd really like to know if Bush knows what in the hell he's doing to the GOP and to the country. I suppose in the end, it doesn't matter whether he knows what he's doing or not. Results are all that matter.

But I'm curious as to if he is being isolated and and given only good news or if he's 100% on board with what's being done in his name.
